Coastal Scientist/Engineer

Sea level rise and extreme storm events are here, dealing with these issues is both challenging and of vital importance. Our work has a direct impact on local communities. Our projects range from the preservation of vulnerable coastal cultural resources at National Historic sites, to the protection of ecologically sensitive dunes and beaches to the improvement of navigation channels for our fishing communities to the creation of exciting new port developments that will empower new economies. We deal with the worldís highest tides day in day out, and we never tire of it.

The candidate who fills this position will join a high performing team of Engineers and Scientists involved in Coastal protection projects as well as flood protection studies in picturesque Atlantic Canada. Your multi-disciplinary team mates include specialists in Landscape/Seascape Terrain Modelling, Geotechnical Engineering, Marine Structural Engineering, Materials Engineering, Transportation Engineering, Earth Sciences, and Heavy Civil Construction. Responsibilities of this position include both leading and supporting the technical execution of projects within Atlantic Canada and beyond.

The candidate who fills this position will be called upon to:

  • Perform coastal flood hazard analysis and mapping with respect to both present day and future conditions.
  • Conduct small- and large-scale climate change vulnerability assessments related to coastal hazards for a wide array of clients from both public and private sectors.
  • Manage, process, and analyze large geospatial datasets.
  • Provide technical support to staff locally and across the region.
  • Produce written documentation via reports and memos of study methodology and results and provides recommendations based on findings.
  • Communicate with technical and non-technical stakeholders to increase risk awareness and support resiliency planning through written, verbal, and visual means.
A successful candidate will have:

  • A penchant for capturing the essence of an engineering problem and conveying practical solutions in an easily understood manner.
  • Exceptional knowledge in spectral wind-wave modelling. This includes the simulation in growth, decay and transformation of wind-generated waves and swell.
  • Exceptional knowledge in shoreline morphology modeling. This includes the modelling of currents and waves and predicting shoreline evolution.
  • High level of proficiency using MIKE 21 software and similar modelling tools.
  • Minimum of a bachelorís degree with a focus on coastal/ocean science or engineering, oceanography, or related field. Masterís degree preferred.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills and a passion for creating detailed and accurate reports and presentations.
  • A passion for increasing our regions shore protection resiliency.
  • 5-10 years of experience.
  • Demonstrated history of technical leadership and independent success.

Senior Geotechnical Engineer

GEMTEC Limited is actively seeking a senior geotechnical engineer to help shape the future of the geotechnical group at our Moncton location. The successful candidate will have an opportunity to generate new and innovative ways to approach consulting engineering. An individual with a wide-range of experience and the ability to make decisions will be very successful in our organization.

Roles and Responsibilities:
The successful candidate will work in several areas of civil, geotechnical and materials engineering including geotechnical investigations, slope stability analysis and assessment, retaining wall design, data interpretation and analysis. Specifically, day-to-day tasks would include:

  • * Provide guidance and support to a team of geotechnical engineers, technicians and technologists on project related matters;
  • * Provide support to Materials Testing division;
  • * Prepare detailed proposals, scope of work and budget estimates for civil engineering projects;
  • * Client management and consultation as required to manage projects and assist in the development of a client base;
  • * Senior review of technical reports produced from multiple office locations;
  • * Participation in developing and growing a team of scientists, technicians and engineers.
  • * Preparation/review of contract specifications, tender documents and engineering drawings as required to facilitate successful project completion.
  • * Project management including budgeting, scheduling and managing scope of work.
Qualifications and Experience:
  • Currently registered or has the ability to register with a professional association (P.Eng.) in one or all of the Atlantic provinces;
  • Bachelorís Degree in civil or geotechnical engineering or related field from an accredited University;
  • Masterís Degree in civil, geotechnical or materials engineering considered an asset;
  • A minimum of 10 years of applicable experience in engineering consulting; exceptional individuals with lesser experience or in a related field (industry, academia, etc.) may also be considered;
  • Bilingual considered an asset;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills;
  • Proven project management skills (PMP designation considered an asset), including managing sub-contractor and internal staff resources;
  • Experience in construction methodologies and material testing services.

Civil Technologist/Technician

GEMTEC currently has an seasonal opening in Grand Falls for individuals who have experience in geotechnical and materials testing. The ideal candidate would be specially suited to working in our materials laboratory undertaking various soils analyses including sieve analysis, Proctors, and asphalt testing.

Educational Requirements:

  • College Level Diploma is considered an asset
  • Training in and experience with soils/materials testing is required
  • Registered or eligible to become registered as a Civil Engineering Technologist (CET) is considered an asset
Main Duties:
  • Laboratory testing of aggregates, soil, concrete and asphalt
  • Field testing and sampling of aggregates, soils, concrete, and asphalt
  • Assisting with compiling reports
Experience and Skills:
  • 5+ years of experience in the engineering industry
  • Experience working in a materials testing laboratory
  • Familiarity and experience with both Marshall and Superpave Asphalt testing and mix designs
  • Experience with topographic surveying and field inspection will be considered an asset
  • Organizational skills are a critical asset
